Recognizing April 2025 as Fair Housing Month in the City of Philadelphia and celebrating the passage of the Fair Housing Act of 1968. WHEREAS, The Fair Housing Act, Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, was signed into law April 11, 1968, by President Lyndon B. Johnson; and WHEREAS, The Act prohibits the discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of housing based on race, religion, national origin, sex, and familial status, continuing to serve as a cornerstone of the nation’s civil rights protections; and WHEREAS, Passage of the Fair Housing Act was a pivotal moment in the Civil Rights Movement, and the Act continues to address the ongoing systemic discrimination in housing that has long plagued America’s society; and WHEREAS, The National Fair Housing Alliance’s most recent report documented the highest number of fair housing complaints on record, emphasizing the continued importance of the Fair Housing Act in combating discrimination in housing; and WHEREAS, The City of Philadelphia is committed to empowering its residents, City employees, public housing authorities, and nonprofit organizations with the knowledge, tools, resources to recognize and combat housing discrimination; and WHEREAS, The Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations has been fighting housing discrimination since 1952 and continues to be a critical partner in fair housing by enforcing the Fair Practices Ordinance, the City’s anti-discrimination law; and WHEREAS, National Fair Housing Month s…
