The Council of the City of Philadelphia recognizes and honors Malala Yousafzai for being the recipient of the 2026 WHYY Lifelong Learning Award for her contributions to the fundamental right to education for all individuals. WHEREAS, Malala’s core belief, that girls must possess the exact same opportunity as boys to learn, grow, and determine their own futures, aligns directly with WHYY’s mission to foster lifelong learning for everyone. Ms. Yousafzai provides a clear framework showing that when individuals receive educational empowerment, families thrive, regional economies grow stronger, and societies become more just; and WHEREAS, In 2012, Malala survived a life-threatening attack aimed at silencing her voice, Ms. Yousafzai's chose to make her story not about violence but resilience, education and speaking out against evil. Her story demonstrated extraordinary resilience and transformed a moment of profound adversity into a worldwide movement; and WHEREAS, Through the strategic initiatives of the Malala Fund, founded out of the proceeds of her book, she partners with global and local advocates to dismantle barriers and policy gaps that prevent girls from completing secondary school.
