Authorizing the creation of the Philly is a Music City Task Force by the Committee of Legislative Oversight to develop and maintain the cultural and economic impact of music in Philadelphia. WHEREAS, The music industry in Philadelphia alone produces $6.1 billion in total annual output. The music economy represents a huge portion of the City’s arts and culture scene as well as wages and compensation, supporting 33,000 jobs and providing $1.4 billion in compensation. This industry provides jobs not just for artists, but in administration, healthcare, real estate, and transportation; and WHEREAS, Philadelphia saw an over $ 6.1 billion economic impact from the music sector; and WHEREAS, That economic impact created and sustained more than 31,000 jobs in the City; and WHEREAS, City Council has declared Philadelphia as the Original Music City; and WHEREAS, The City should explore ways to harness the cultural and economic impact of Philadelphia’s music industry; and WHEREAS, Exploring Philadelphia’s music infrastructure, music education, music consumption, and music production will grow an already prosperous industry; and WHEREAS, A thriving Philadelphia music industry will convince aspiring professionals to stay in Philly rather than choose a city which currently embraces the music brand; and WHEREAS, A Philly is a Music City Task Force will explore these topics and send recommendations to City Council for consideration; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF…
